Key Takeaways
-
Segregate Financial Responsibilities: Never allow the person who enters or approves invoices to write checks, manage payroll, or reconcile bank accounts. Dual-signoffs and independent reviews are mandatory.
-
Familiarity Is Not an Internal Control: An employee’s friendly tenure or personal closeness does not eliminate the need for routine audits, background investigations, and rigorous documentation.
-
Reconcile Discrepancies Immediately: Unmatched payroll taxes, vendor invoices without delivery proof, or lifestyle leaps that don’t match reported salaries demand a line-by-line review, not casual assumptions.
